Road Safety Commission outlines plans to curtail road accidents

In an attempt to find lasting solutions to the spate of road accidents that have characterised roads and highways in the country, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) last Monday held a consultative meeting with regional road safety managers in Koforidua.

The meeting was to discuss in detail the 2009 Work Plan and Budget, as well as serve as a platform to operationalise directives from the sector Minister, in respect to recent disturbing road traffic crashes.

In his welcome address, the Executive Director of the NRSC, Mr. Noble Appiah, stated that the meeting would also be used to present emerging trends, policy initiatives, and strategies, ongoing and upcoming projects.

According to him, in spite of the seemingly difficult position the NRSC finds itself, in terms of meeting the expectations of road users, his outfit would continue to be resolute and exhibit a high sense of commitment, and show passion for road safety.

“We have to be proactive, creative and willing to take risks, to enable us deliver on our mandates,” he added.

He explained that the recent disturbing road crashes should serve as a wake-up call to all and sundry, particularly officers of the NRSC, to find the need to be objective and assess strategies to end the menace.

He mentioned the introduction of log books, advanced warning triangle lights and reflective tapes in commercial vehicles, as some of the strategies and measures to be embarked on by the NRSC.

These measures, he continued, were designed to mitigate fatigue, and improve the visibility of disabled vehicles.

Mr. Appiah, however, called on the general public not to be afraid, but rather remain steadfast, since the NRSC was committed to its statutory role, and would provide strategic leadership in addressing the situation.
