As part of activities to mark this year's International Women's Day, the New Juaben South Member of Parliament (MP), Madam Bernice B. Boateng, has organised a day of free medical screening for residents, mostly market women within the constituency.

Speaking to the Eastern File during the programme, which took place in the market, Mr. Boateng stated that March 8 every year had been set aside to celebrate, and reflect on the challenges that affect the smooth development of women in the world.

This year's celebration, which took place in the United States of America (USA), was under the theme, “Men and Women United to End Violence against Women and Girls.

Touching on the theme, the MP, who is affectionately called 'Iron Lady,' said the theme was most appropriate, since any problem that affected the development of every woman was a national problem, hence the collective goal to find solution to the problems.

She explained that it would be paramount for the involvement of men in the fight against violence, since in most cases they (men) were the cause of violence.

Given the essence of the exercise, she said, in order to ensure accelerated socio economic development as a nation, the health of the people should be considered in high esteem, saying “a healthy person is a healthy nation.”

MP Boateng continued that the decision to organise the exercise, was born out of the fact that most market women give considerable attention to their businesses, at the expense of health.

In all about 700 people were screened for diseases such as malaria, hypertension, HIV/AIDS and diabetes among others.
