The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe, has proposed the setting up of a committee to address the numerous chieftaincy and land disputes in the region

Addressing the Regional House of Chiefs in Cape Coast, Mrs Benyiwa-Doe asked chiefs to stop the outright sale of land: they should invest such lands in equity shares for the communities.

Ms Benyiwa-Doe was on her first visit to the House to formally introduce herself to the chiefs  as the first woman minister for the region.

She pledged to give priority to the chieftaincy institution as a partner in the development of the region to eradicate poverty, diseases, squalor and ignorance.

“It is sad to observe that the region which boasts of being the first to taste formal education placed last in the latest Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Our children do not get access to the schools in the region because of very poor performance,” she said.

She reiterated the need for parents to invest in the education of their children instead of spending money on funerals.

The regional minister also expressed commitment to address the issue of representation of the House on the Board of the Central Regional Development Commission (CEDECOM) and other committees of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

The president of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, Daasebre Kweibu Ewusi, expressed support for the government in its bid to unite the country and called for cooperation by all Ghanaians.

At another meeting with the media, Mrs Benyiwa-Doe appealed to them to support efforts geared towards the development of the region, saying the present state of under-development and poverty, require a concerted effort to eradicate them.

She commended the media for their role in promoting the region but said there is more to be done and pledged to work with them to bring hope and development to the people.
