The Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) is to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

Mrs. Anne Ninfeabeliebe, Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairperson of the Union, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview after the Sunyani branch of the PSWU had held its quarterly meeting in Sunyani on Thursday.

She could not give the specific date for the anniversary but added that the Union's hierarchy was yet to fix an appropriate date for the celebration.

Mrs. Ninfeabeliebe said the national anniversary would be launched in Accra in March and would be replicated in regions and districts.

Programmes lined up for the anniversary include symposiums, public debates, clean up exercises, games, floats among others, Mrs. Ninfeabeliebe said.

She added that prizes ranging from televisions sets, refrigerators, sound systems, certificates among other things would be awarded to individuals and organisations that had worked in diverse ways to make the Union vibrant.

Mrs. Ninfeabeliebe appealed to corporate organisations, spirited individuals and philanthropists to support the PSWU to make the anniversary a success.

The regional chairperson said the region had a total membership of 1,211 and that the union was working hard to correct the anomalies and discrepancies associated with the salaries of some members.

Earlier, Mr. Charles Kwasi Kumi, Regional Industrial Relations Officer, stressed the need to re-organise the various locals of the union to make them contribute effectively in nation building.

“It is always better that we meet all the time to discuss matters of our own interest,” he said, stressing that “ensuring the growth and development of PSWU is a shared responsibility between the various organisations under the union”.
