Please, Dr. Bawumia, get out fast before they get you
It started as a rumour. That Dr Mahamud Bawumia, former Deputy Governor, Bank of Ghana (or is it substantive Dep. Gov) and running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP Presidential candidate had gone back to his post.
When the information first got to me, I dismissed it with the wave of the hand as a story without substance. How could this be? I asked myself. Later, when details began to emerge, I told a colleague that Dr Bawumia had boxed himself into a tight corner.
The Central Bank is pivot of the Government financial and economic policies.
It therefore behooves on those holding very sensitive positions in the Bank to be above board and not show any lineage towards any political party. As human beings, one cannot be apolitical. But the position one holds in a public institution like the Bank of Ghana precludes such a person from identifying him/herself with any of the political parties in the country.
Thus, I deem it as unethical for Bawumia to attempt to go back to his position at the Bank of Ghana. On moral grounds, it would be better for him to put a halt to his bid to go back. I learn't he has one more year to complete his contract with the Bank of Ghana. But
Contract or no contract, having openly identified himself with the NPP and mounted the political platform to campaign for the party, it will be improper for him to go back to the BOG where the Government financial and economic policies are hatched.
While on the political platform campaigning, Dr Bawumia might have said certain negative things about NDC financial policies. How can he be expected to help implement some of those policies he might have spoken against during the electioneering campaigns?
I entreat all those championing the cause of Dr Bawumia to put a halt to such attempts. It is unethical, immoral and improper to do so. It would be like what the Japanese term “Kamikazi”.
Already, bad blood has been created with Dr Bawumia's flirtation with the New Patriotic Party. The NDC Government now knows where his allegiance is. And you don't give ammunition to your enemy to shoot you down.
We have to face facts. I am full blooded NPP man and would not be happy to see the NDC running mate going back to head any public institution of which he had been heading if we had won the election. I believe all other NPP activists and sympathizers will share same sentiments with me
Let us not attempt to re-enact the Rawlings – Arkaah imbrioglio. It will not auger well for our nascent democracy. Arkaah who was Rawlings Deputy (Vice President) mounted an opposition platform to condemn some policies of the Government which he was part of. Instead of resigning his position, he did not but insisted on chairing cabinet meetings with the excuse that the constitution guaranteed him that.
Rawlings who was the President at that time felt, the situation should not be allowed to continue. How could you attend our meetings and then leak our decisions and secrets to our political opponents. It was then shove turned to push and push to fisticuffs. The rest of the story is history.
And so, my appeal goes to Dr Bawumia and all those championing his cause. It is true he has a contract with BOG. But his presence there would be detrimental to his career and that of the nation. How do you force yourself to remain at a place where you are not wanted? If he insists on remaining as Dep. Governor of Bank of Ghana, we might only be postponing the evil day, for the break/split would eventually arrive. But it might come at a time when frayed nerves might have been bruised. I remember the Brazilian player Ronaldo was with a club, Real Madrid, I think. He had some problems with the club and wanted to leave. He bought himself out of the contract.
I would advise Dr Bawumia to do likewise, for in his own case, he doesn't have to pay any money to BOG. Rather, it is the Bank that has to pay him off. All that he needs to do is to start negotiations with his employees.
He should not allow himself to be humiliated out of office. The hawks in the NDC will ensure that. Why give them such an opportunity? Is he desperately looking for a job so much so that he will go back to a place where there are no smiling faces around? His credentials are such that he wouldn't have problems looking for a job. Why then is he stubbornly clinching to his position as Dep. Governor at the Bank of Ghana?
Please, Dr.Bawumia, you have limited time to get yourself sorted out. A delay is dangerous for it is immoral and unethical for you to remain at BOG as one of its Deputy Governors. You have been given a letter to tender in your resignation or be sacked. Why do you wait for the inevitable when the situation can be averted? A sack is a sack and it will be a stain on your impeccable track record.
Please, be reasonable and wise. Do not create a constitutional crisis by resorting to an endless legal action which, in the end might not be in your interest and that of the country. Even if you go to court and win the case, can you work at the place where you might feel daggers in the smiles of men? What if they keep you in an office and nothing is brought to your desk? What if they ostracize you from their deliberations?
For your own sake and that of mother Ghana, get out fast before they get you. Do not say I did not warn you oo.
