ER Police urge NDC to ensure peace

By The Statesman

The Eastern Regional Police Commander and Chairman of the Regional Election Task Force, DCOP George Anko-Bil has expressed his appreciation to people in the Eastern Region, especially NPP and NDC supporters for ensuring peace during and after the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

He said apart from what happened at Akwatia and currently in Afram Plains, the region has been relatively calm, thus making it possible for people to go about their businesses peacefully.

Speaking in an interview with The Statesman at Koforidua at the weekend, DCOP Anko-Bil appealed to NDC supporters in the Afram Plains to co-exist with NPP counterparts to ensure peace in the area.

He said their jubilation should be devoid of insults and casting of insinuations, reminding them that such behaviour has the tendency of creating tension in the country.

It was reported on Friday that NDC supporters in the Afram Plains have resorted to acts of provocation and vandalism of government property in the area.

The report said property provided with state funds were being destroyed as well as defacing of bill boards of Parliamentary candidates of the NPP.

It was also reported that the supporters have also destroyed a public place of convenience at Ekye Amanfrom and also went ahead to gather T shirts of the District Chief Executive, Solomon Y Fordjour and that of Nana Akufo-Addo, put them in a coffin and buried them at Maame Krobo.

These acts, DCOP Anko-Bil said did not urgur well for a country like Ghana in the eyes of the international community. He appealed to them to put an end to such behaviour as it would not be in anybody's interest.

The Regional Police Commander urged all District Police commanders to use the media to preach peace.

The Deputy Regional Police Commander, Rev ACP Ampah Bannin also appealed to the jubilants to operate within the laws of the land. He said acts of provocation and vandalism should be out of Ghanaian politics since Ghanaians are inter-related.

He commended all the stake holders in the elections, namely, the Military, the Police, the Immigration Service, CEPS and the Fire Service as well as the media, Chiefs and Queenmothers, the health service and political parties among others for the role they played to make the elections peaceful.

Meanwhile, the NDC on Friday suffered a casualty on Friday when one of their supporters collapsed and died after a marathon celebration with colleagues on Thursday.

The man, believed to be in his thirties and of Frafra extraction reportedly enjoyed good music from Thursday morning to evening and woke up on Friday completely dehydrated. The man, yet to be identified managed to walk to where the jubilation took place for support, but the only support he received was water poured on him.
