Who leads NPP in parliament?
With the dust now settling on the presidential and parliamentary elections, and a day before the inauguration of a new President and Parliament, the focus is now shifting on who leads the third arm of government - the legislature - and the leadership of the Majority and the Minority in Parliament.
Names such as Mohammed Mumuni, Prof Mills's running mate in 2004 and Alban S K Bagbin, current Minority Leader, have come up as possible Speakers of Parliament.
But our checks indicate it is the side of the NPP that is generating the most interest.
Candidates whose names have consistently come up as possible Minority Leader include Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, current Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Suame; Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, MP for New Juaben North; and Mike Aaron Oquaye, MP for Dome-Kwabenya. Also under consideration is Joe Ghartey, MP for Essikado/Ketan, who may get the Deputy Majority Leader slot.
S K Balado Manu, MP for Ahafo Ano South and First Deputy Majority Whip; and Gifty Ohene-Konadu MP for Asante Akim South and Second Deputy Majority Whip are also in contention.
Below, The Statesman publishes an abridged version of the profiles of the three men currently on the shortlist for Minority Leader.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is the MP for Suame. He first entered Parliament on January 7, 1997, and has served on almost all the committees in the House, giving him a rich experience in parliamentary
He is considered one of the pillars of the House, intricately involved in the drafting of a vast number of bills.
He is currently the Deputy Majority Leader, having earlier served as Majority Chief Whip.
He is the Vice Chairman of the Business Committee, as well as member of the Appointments and Public Accounts Committees.
He previously taught at the Kumasi Girls Secondary School, from 1985-1987. He later joined DATAF (Zimbabwe) as Planning and Projects Manager from 1988-1989; Osabons Ent, as Managing Director (1990-1991).
He was born on February 3, 1957 at Bremang-Afrancho Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
He holds BSc (Planning) KNUST, 1978-1982.
Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is a Christian, married with 4 children.
Mike Aaron Oquaye is the MP for Dome Kwabenya.
A Founding Member of New Patriotic Party, he entered Parliament on January 7, 2005.
Prior to that, he served as Ghana"s High Commissioner to India between 2001 and 2004.
He was also the Minister for Environment and Science from 2004-2005, Minister for Energy from 2005 to 2006 and was Minister for Communication from 2006 until he resigned in July 2007 to contest the NPP flagbeareship position.
Prof Oquaye was in charge of the Greater Accra Region during the recent parliamentary and presidential elections.
He is a qualified solicitor and barrister, associated with University of London and Lincoln's Inn, London, as well as the founder and senior partner of his own law firm.
Prof. Oquaye is a professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana.
He received his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and won the Rockefeller Award in 1993 and the Fullbright Award in 1997.
He has been a visiting lecturer at George Manson University in Virginia.
Prof. Oquaye has a number of written works to his credit including: Politics in Ghana 1982-1992, Democracy, Politics and Conflict Resolution in contemporary Ghana.
He is the editor of a book on "The Ghanaian elections of 1992 - A dissenting view'.
He was one of the first columnists for The Statesman ; prolific writer including Politics in Ghana (1982-1992).
He was born in Accra on April 4, 1944. He is married to Alberta Oquaye and has six children.
Hackman Owusu-Agyemang is also a founding member of NPP. He first entered Parliament in January 7, 1997. After the NPP won the December 2000 elections, he was appointed the Foreign Minister from January 2001 to April 2003.
He then became the Minister for Interior for two years. In 2005, he was appointed Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, resigning in July 2007 to contest for the party's flagbearership later that year.
Mr Owusu-Agyemang has served in a number of positions within the NPP, including National Treasurer; member of the National Executive Council; member of the Finance Committee; member of the Organisation Committee; and member of the Agricultural Sector Committee.
