The National Commission or
Civic Education (NCCE) on Monday called on Ghanaians to allow
Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission
(EC), to discharge his constitutional mandate of declaring the final
results of the Presidential Election Runoff.
A statement signed by Mr Farhan Larry Bimi, Chairman of
the Commission, in Accra, noted that any act of provocative
jubilation by winning party supporters could become
counter-productive to the nation's nascent democratic development.
The Commission further called on Ghanaians to remain calm as
the nation got closer to electing a new Leader.
It also exhorted all party leaders to restrain their supporters and
sympathizers to see the outcome of the election as a victory for
Ghana as well as Ghanaians and not for one person or one party.
“We urge all community leaders, chiefs, opinion leaders,
heads of faith- based organisations and all identifiable bodies to
impress upon their members to heed to the NCCE's call to enhance
national cohesion and peace at this crucial period of the country's
tenuous political environment,” the statement said.
“Whoever is declared by the Electoral Commission as
duly elected must be accepted by all Ghanaians as the new president
of the nation,” the Commission said.
