Total Petroleum World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.
AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, with an estimated 38.6 million people living with making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history.
Established December 1, 1988, the day serves as a means to increase awareness, fight prejudice, and improve education about HIV and AIDS.
Honoring this day is an important way of reminding people that HIV is an ongoing issue that affects millions at home and around the world, and the theme for 2008 is “Leadership”.
In celebrating this year's World AIDS Day, Total Petroleum Ghana, supported the HIV/AIDS prevention campaign with a sensitization workshop for employees through prevention, awareness and other related issues. The theme for the workshop was “Leadership: Reducing stigma and discrimination”. The company distributed free condoms and HIV/AIDS educational materials to employees during the workshop.
Management of the company also distributed free condoms to drivers at some of its service stations in Accra.
Over the years, Total Petroleum Ghana Ltd has lived up to its corporate social responsibility by supporting and promoting social causes in the country and recently supported the anti-malaria campaign where several mosquito treated nets were given out to beneficiaries under the auspices of the company.
