Kumasi Gets Labour Court

Chief Justice Georgina Wood Another labour court is to be set up in Kumasi in February next year to settle labour disputes. The court would be a division of the High Court.

Chief Justice Georgina Wood, who announced this in Accra, said the setting up of the industrial courts was born out of the need to ensure a stable industrial relations climate in the country.

She was speaking when members of the National Labour Commission (NLC) led by its Chairperson, Joseph Ayitey, paid a courtesy call on her.

Mrs Wood said in settling labour disputes, the Labour Commission should be guided by the rule of natural justice. She said where there was no breach of the rules of natural justice in the determination of disputes, the commission would not encounter any problem when it applies to the High Court for enforcement of its decisions, stressing that the court would only endorse its decisions.

On the concerns over an Accra High Court ruling earlier this year that an employer was not obliged to assign reasons for the termination of the employment of a worker, the Chief Justice told the Commission that its court could appeal to the Appeal and Supreme courts.

In his remarks, the Chairperson of NLC, Joseph Ayitey, thanked the Chief Justice for the establishment of the labour courts.

He urged the labour courts to be mindful of the need to appreciate the role of NLC in stabilizing the industrial relations atmosphere. From Business Desk
