Operatives of the opposition National Democratic Congress have reached a new low, according to The Statesman's security sources.
Staring defeat in the face, and fearful of the projected disintegration of the Rawlings voting machine, the NDC, in line with the plan to discredit the results of the December 7 poll as a prelude to rejecting it, have hit on a plan to tag the ruling party with rigging.
The plot: print thousands of replica ballot papers, distribute them across the country but with a heavy concentration in NPP strongholds, thumb print them for NPP candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, and then cause the arrest of some selected - and paid - youth to lend credibility to the rigging charge.
The victims have been promised their freedom as well as large bonuses, latest by January 8, if the NDC wins Sunday"s poll, our sources within the security services have confirmed.
The elaborate plot forms part of a larger scheme to stage manage mayhem, but at a supposedly safe distance, in the run up to and during the election period, to save the party's blushes and create the impression to the international community that the elections were manipulated to favour the ruling party.
Already, the NDC has accused every stakeholder in the national election process, from the Electoral Commission through the state security apparatus to the government of bias.
At press conference after press conference, allegations - never substantiated - are levelled against one body or the order.
Indeed, the Jerry Rawlings-founded party has earned itself the unenviable tag of crying wolf when no sheep is in sight and in danger of being devoured.
The evidence speaks for itself. For instance, after insisting, at a widely publicised press conference, that government had imported arms into the country without the necessary approval and improperly stored them at a warehouse in Anyaa, a suburb of Accra, leading to an explosion that killed at least half a dozen people, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, NDC General Secretary, and Mohammed Mumuni, John Atta Mills"s running mate in the 2004 election, told the National Security constituted committee investigating the blast that they had no evidence to back up their claim that the warehouse was actually filled with firearms because they had returned the 'exhibits' they displayed on national television to the NDc activists who supplied them with the 'evidence'.
Worse, after a demonstration by Police Ballistic Analyst Supt/CSMT Raymond Simpi, the two NDC topguns admitted the 'evidence' produced at the press conference could have been fire crackers.
"Supt/CSMT Mr Simpi then explained how fire crackers perform. After the explanation, the two NDC stalwarts appeared convinced that, the exhibits they showed at their press conference were similar to those in possession of the committee which were fire crackers', the report noted. The NDC told the media at the aforementioned press conference that they had sought the opinion of security and ammunition
