THE acting Director of the Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), Christopher Angkosaala, has appealed to the government to expedite action on the enactment of the new GIL Act because the NLCD 324 of 1962, that established the institute is “no longer relevant for the growth and dynamism of modern day bilingual training”.
He was addressing the seventh matriculation ceremony of the institute on Saturday at which 583 students were enrolled to pursue programmes in Applied Linguistics, this academic year.
The institute which has two other campuses in Kumasi and Tamale, offer courses in Arabic, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
Mr Angkosaala said the institute has become a centre for the promotion of international cooperation through breaking language and cultural barriers.
“Wherever you go, you would meet products of the institute contributing immensely in private and public service both locally and internationally” he said.
He said in spite of its relevance and impact, the institute was constrained in infrastructure and other academic facilities which impede achievement of its targets.
Mr Angkosaala said with the support of the GETFund, their hopes of having extra facilities had been rekindled with the construction of a two-storey classroom block at Okponglo in Accra.
“However more structures are still to be put in place to enable the institute to achieve its targets with speed”, he said.
He advised the students to learn hard so that they can keep pace with the mission and vision of the school, “go out into the world as ambassadors of peace, harmony and understanding, the most needed values in our world today.
“You would have to disassociate yourselves from any attitudes, habits and influences that have a negative incidence on your training and focus your attention on your chosen courses”, he added.
Mr Frank Keri Acquah, of the School of Translators, on behalf of the students, pledged to live up to the task and abide by the rules and regulations of the institution in order not to tarnish its image.
“We will rather appreciate this opportunity granted us by making good grades to lift the banner of this institution very high” he said. He promised that, the students will follow the correct procedures and mechanisms to channel their grievances should anything of that sort arise.
