> Dr Mahama to establish National Health Maintenance Organisation

The presidential candidate of the People's National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigrie Mahama, has given the assurance that he will establish a National Health Maintenance Organisation (NHMO) to increase the life expectancy of Ghanaians if voted into power.

He said the NHMO, which would be an improvement on the current National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), would promote the health and prolong the life of Ghanaians.

He disclosed that under this programme, a Medical Intelligence Unit would be set in every district to monitor people for the early detection of preventable disease, which were normally detected at advance stages, which made their treatment difficult and expensive.

Dr Mahama said this at Mirigu during his campaign tour of the Paga-Chiana Constituency of the Upper East Region.

He was accompanied by the vice presidential candidate of the PNC, Ms. Petra Maria Amegashie; the National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan; the National Women Organiser, Hajia Ajara Ali; the PNC Parliamentary candidate for Paga-Chiana Constituency, Mr Santuah Niagia Francis, and regional and constituency executive of the party.

They visited Sirigu, Mirigu, Nabongo, Paga, Katui, Kayoro, Nakpong and Chiana, all in the Paga-Chiana Constituency of the Upper East Region.

The presidential candidate disclosed that under the NHMO more doctors would be trained to take care of the aged to increase the average life expectancy of the Ghanaian from 59 to 85 years.

He said recreational centres would also be set up in every district capital where games of all kinds and play kits for children would be provided for children and the elderly to exercise themselves mentally and physically.

Dr Mahama said the greatest challenge facing rural communities was the unavailability of potable water for the people and their animals during the dry season and the unmotorable nature of their roads, which has not seen any remarkable improvement for the past 16 years.

He said under his urban renewable programme, some villages would be upgraded into model villages where all the facilities of a modern town would be provided and factories established to provide jobs for the youth and also to create markets for neighbouring countries.

Dr Mahama urged supporters of the party to come out in their numbers on election day to vote massively for the party.

He also called on the youth to be vigilant but not to involve themselves in any violent confrontations as the party stood for peace and would not want to do anything to mar the elections.

The running mate of the PNC, Ms Amegashie said the PNC was the only party that had a credible policy to improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable in society.

She said among all the parties, it was Dr Mahama who had the courage to take the initiative of choosing a woman as his running mate, which was followed suit by other two political parties.

She said women had a vital role to play in the development of the nation and promised to champion the cause of women and children when they are voted into power.
