New CEO of GT aims high…as he unveils vision to provide quality services

By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh & Chris Twum - Ghanaian Chronicle

The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Telecom (GT), Mr. David Venn, has unveiled his vision for the Ghanaian telecommunications industry, and promised to introduce innovative and quality products and services onto the market.

This, he said, would help his company take a big share of the market, as well as consolidating its position on the telecom landscape.

He added that he would restructure the company to make it more customer friendly, stating “We are going to have a Head of Mobile and other new departmental heads soon.”

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Mr. Venn noted that those measures would help transform the company to become the leading telecom company in West Africa.

Also, the company was poised to invest part of its capital in the provision of telecom infrastructure, to enable Ghanaians have a feel of the “Vodafone experience”.

Instructively, the new CEO takes over from Mr. Dickson Oduro-Nyaning, whose contract ended on November 10, this year.

Mr. Oduro-Nyaning retired from Ghana Telecom in May 2007, after 35 years service with the company.

The then sole shareholder, the Government of Ghana, asked him to continue serving as CEO, since the company was being prepared for divestiture.

Mr. Venn is a respected business leader, with proven experience in driving growth and implementing innovative business strategies.

He has spent the last five years in Zambia, gaining good knowledge and special insights into the African telecommunications market.

Mr. Venn's career in the telecommunications industry spans over 30 years, during which time he has transitioned businesses into fast-growing and dynamic organisations, which have returned significant shareholder value.

The new CEO, Mr. Venn, has also worked in a number of telecommunications enterprises in the USA, UK, and other parts of Europe.

Mr. Venn has also held leadership positions in Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia.
