> GSS To Assist In Training Statisticians

Management of Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has offered to collaborate with authorities of tertiary institutions in the country to develop modules for training students in “Official Statistics'.

Dr Grace Bediako, Government Statistician announced this at a workshop for public officials and private sector operators in Ho.

The National Strategy for Development of Statistics (NSDS) and GSS Corporate Plan (CP) and issues pertaining to official statistics were discussed.

She said GSS was ready to provide technical oversight to develop in-service training for those on the job in the Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.

Dr Bediako said a challenge that needed to be overcome was related to the supervision of statistics personnel posted to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.

Mr Kofi Agyeman-Duah, Director Co-ordination and Capacity Building Division of GSS, answering questions on financing the NSDS, said the bulk of the funding would come from the Government with assistance from the private sector and donor community, after Parliament had enacted the NSDS Law.

He explained that NSDS sought to achieve a fully co-ordinated statistical system by 2013 with sectoral linkages that would ensure a reliable statistical regime to aid the formulation of informed policies.
