Nana Yaw Osei, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has been elected the Presiding Member (PM) of the Asante Akyem South District Assembly at Juaso.
Nana Yaw Osei, an elected assembly member for Tokwai Electoral Area, defeated Messrs Boakye Yiadom Manu, Claims Manager of the Mutual Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) at Juaso, and J.K. Boakye Mensah of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) headquarters in Accra, during the first round of voting, but could not get the two-thirds majority of all members of the assembly.
While Nana Yaw Osei, who is also a staff of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd in Kumasi, had 37, Mr Yiadom Manu and Boakye Mensah, who contested the position with him got 16 and 3 respectively, but that could not guarantee him victory.
During the second round of voting, when the two other candidates with lesser votes had withdrawn from the race, Nana Yaw Osei again faced assembly members for his fate to be decided to see if he could garner the required two-thirds of the 60-member assembly.
This time, he managed to secure 47 votes, representing 85.5 per cent.
Before voting started, candidates were given two minutes each to outline their visions and what they could do to help propel the district to the targets it had set for itself.
Nana Yaw Osei, after the vote, thanked the other contestants for their competitive spirit, and urged all to forge ahead in unity for the overall development of the district.
He gave the assurance that he would put his expertise and experience at the disposal of the assembly to enhance its effective and efficient administration.
The new Presiding Member also called for support from within and outside the district to enable him do his work efficiently.
He thanked all who in diverse ways helped in propelling him to that position.
