The Federation of Transport Union (FTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has appealed to government to give financial support to transport operators.
It said transport companies such as the Metro Mass Transport Limited, Kingdom Transport Service and the Intercity Transport Limited, charge fares far below approved fares of the Ghana Transport Coordinating Council.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, on Wednesday, Mr Emmanuel Armstrong Mensah, Coordinator of the FTU, said to leave such organizations to struggle for loans does not augur well.
He said the transport operators had provided jobs for the youth as well as some social services, and that with the high cost of spare parts and other logistics, it was important that they are assisted.
He noted that, if they decide to charge the approved rates, many people, including workers would be financially burdened.
Mr Mensah said the transport services must be sustained to assist commuters or else it would affect the whole economy.
