The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is investing $500 million to improve upon the container handling capacity of the Tema Harbour.
Feasibility studies for the programme are at the advanced stage of completion and the project, if completed, will not only create jobs and improve revenue generation but also enhance the country's status as the gateway to the sub-region in terms of port services.
The Director-General of the GPHA, Mr Ben Owusu-Mensah, who disclosed this in Tema yesterday, explained that currently the port was operating at its optimum capacity of 500,000 Teu (containers) per annum.
Mr Owusu-Mensah was briefing a five-member management team of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, led by its Managing Director, Mr Ibrahim Awal.
He said in the past, the port faced problems of congestion but with the construction of the Golden Jubilee Terminal, container handling capacity had improved tremendously from 166,963 in 2000 to 489,147 in 2008.
He said the port had moved from a first generation port to a modern third generation port, which could be compared with any European port in terms of infrastructure.
Mr Owusu-Mensah said with the oil find, there was a change in direction of the Takoradi Port, adding that there were plans to expand it to handle oil services.
He said the GPHA had had many demands from oil companies for space to operate and added that their requests were being considered.
He commended the Graphic Communications Group Limited, saying the company's newspapers had benefited from competition on the market.
He said the Daily Graphic was way ahead of other newspapers and urged the company to ensure that airlines subscribed to its papers.
Mr Awal, for his part, thanked the GPHA for patronising the company's products.
He said the Daily Graphic was now the biggest newspaper in West Africa and that the company was building a new press house that would be inaugurated next year.
He said the company was ready to publish a quarterly supplement on the ports and urged the GPHA to take advantage of it.
Mr Awal thanked the management of the GPHA for agreeing to increase their subscription to the company's newspapers.
