Authorities of Wa Polytechnic to establish a science and technology

Authorities of Wa Polytechnic would soon establish a science and technology park for physical infrastructure development towards collaboration between the Polytechnic and industry, Professor S.K. Agodzo, Rector of Wa Polytechnic has said.

He said the park in addition to attracting local industries, entrepreneurs from neighbouring Burkina Faso would also participate in the park.

Professor Agodzo announced this at the sixth Matriculation of Wa Polytechnic at Wa. It admitted 691 students for the 2008/2009 academic year.

He said the concept was expected to draw on world-wide experience not only for tertiary education delivery but also encourage local industries participation in activities of tertiary institutions.

“Our central workshop forms the nucleus for this technology park and we wish to invite industry to collaborate with us,” Professor Agodzo said.

He said the strategic thrust of the Polytechnic had been focused on human resource development, training, research and innovation, physical infrastructure expansion, information communication and technology development and expansion as well as financial resources mobilization and management.

Professor Agodzo said the authorities had established a modern Cosmetology Clinic to provide local training needs of stakeholders in the cosmetology trade and the public.

He said resources generated from Teaching and Learning Innovation Fund (TALIF) and Agricultural Engineering Department would be used to set up a meat processing unit as a training and income generating facility.

Professor Agodzo said efforts were being made to build a hostel facility for students with funds from Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) to improve accommodation at the polytechnic.

He commended government and its development partners, such as Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Spanish Government, Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Dutch Government for their immense contribution towards development of the polytechnic.

Professor Agodzo advised the students to work hard and conscientiously pursue knowledge, inculcate hard work into their values and aspire to live above reproach to build a progressive and prosperous society.
