Apprentice artist gets years incarceration for impregnating a minor

A 19-year old apprentice Artist who defiled and impregnated a 12-year old girl has been sentenced to seven years in jail.

Alfred Kumi, the convict who pleaded guilty was given the minimum sentence for the offence because of the remorsefulness he showed both at the police station, when he was first arrested and also at the courtroom at the time his prosecution began.

Prosecuting, Mr George Appau-Sakyi, Assistant Superintendent of police told the court presided over by Mr Eric Baah that the victim, a Junior High School (JHS) student, lives with her parents at Asafo, while the convict lives at Adiebeba, all suburbs of Kumasi.
He said Kumi who met the girl for first time at Adum whilst paying a visit to her auntie, took interest in her and lured her to his residence, where he forcibly had sex with her resulting in the pregnancy.
The Prosecutor said the victim who did not disclose her ordeal until she fell sick later and was taken to the hospital and diagnosed to be nine-weeks pregnant.
Upon interrogation, the victim mentioned the convict as the one responsible for the pregnancy.
The convict was arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOWSU) of the Police and in his caution statement, he admitted the offence.
