Don`t make empty promises… Traditional ruler tells politicians

01.09.2008 LISTEN
By Richard Kofi Attenkah, Prampram - Ghanaian Chronicle

The Paramount Chief of the Prampram Traditional Area, Nene Tetteh Djan III, has cautioned politicians, especially the various flagbearers, to be mindful of the kind of promises they make to the electorate, on their campaign platforms.

According to him, the ordinary Ghanaian had become politically conscious, so much so, that they can no longer be taken for granted, saying “When you fail to fulfil the promise you make to them today, next time round, they will disappoint you.”

He, therefore, called on our politicians, to be guided by their pronouncements, and ensure that they delivered on their promises.

Nene Tetteh Djan III made this statement at a press briefing, after the launching of the annual Homowo Festival, which took place at Prampram last Tuesday, at his palace.

He lamented that some of the promises, especially those made on road construction, were like building castles in the air, because as he put it, “some of the roads can be used for maize farming.”

The Paramount Chief, who is also the Vice President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, and a member of the National House of Chiefs, pointed out that some of the political messages during campaign seasons were full of empty promises, because when they assume power, they are unable to deliver them.

He, therefore, reminded politicians that anytime it was election time, they should remember that the good people of this country, would vote, based on who was truthful in his promises.

The Prampram Paramount Chief also expressed grave worry over development in his traditional area.

He lamented that his traditional area had several Junior High schools, and two universities, but they did not have a single Senior High School in the area.

He mentioned that the issue of landguards was a major challenge, he and his elders, as well as the people in the area, were confronted with.

He advised residents of Prampram, to keep their environment clean, by making sanitation a way of life, but should not wait until special occasions like the Homowo Festival, among others, before undertaking cleanup exercises.
