Youth advised to channel their energies into sports

  Wed, 27 Aug 2008

Professor Dominic Fobih, Minister of Education, Science and Sports on Monday urged the youth to channel their energies into sporting events rather than indulging and supporting political violence.

He said it was better for them to channel their energies into sports, which he said provides greater benefits than political violence or social vices since most of the great men of the world had contributed in one way or another to sports development.
The Minister gave the advice when he opened the week long 28th National Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival at Cape Coast.

Ten regional teams made up of about 1,500 athletes are competing in athletics, handball, volleyball, table tennis and netball.
Prof Fobih reiterated the need for students to refrain from drugs usage and other social vices, adding that the nation cannot afford to lose its vibrant and intellectual youth to drugs.
He disclosed that the government had finalized a deal with Anglogold Ashanti to renovate sporting fields in all the districts while another deal has being reached to re-grass the Central Regional Schools and Colleges Park.
In an address read on his behalf, the Central Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur, stressed the need for students who have been selected for their regional teams to see it as a privilege and an opportunity to build a good foundation for their future, adding that involving in sporting activities will serve as a shield against violence and immoral acts.
Nana Arthur urged the participants to take advantage of their stay in the Central regional capital to visit the various tourist sites such as the forts and castles.
Mr. Alfred Taylor, a citizen of Cape Coast and an Attorney and Counselor at law who is based in the United Kingdom, presented 15 trophies to the Upper East and Ahanta-West District Education offices to be presented to winners of sporting events in the two districts.

He also presented four other trophies and an undisclosed amount of money to long -serving sports teachers and deserving sports students in the region and noted that the presentations formed part of his annual contribution to the development of sports in the country and to motivate more sportsmen to give of their best.
