Government urged to establish teachers’ motivation fund
Mr Mohammed Na-eem Kpedau, President of Lawra Senior High School Old Students Association, has appealed to government to establish a "Teacher Motivation Endowment Fund" to enhance quality education in the country.
He noted that objectives of the new educational reforms could not be achieved without the needed attention on teachers' motivation and remuneration.
Mr Kpedau made the appeal at the launching of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Lawra Senior High School at Lawra.
He commended government for providing infrastructure for schools throughout the country but efforts should be made to attract quality teachers to the less endowed schools and keep them in the various institutions.
Mr Kpedau appealed to government to ensure the regular provision of boarding school feeding grants for schools in Upper West, East and Northern Regions to promote quality education.
He called on past students of schools in the Region to take a centre stage in the development of their alma mater.
Mr Kpedau said the association had planned to re-stock the school's library with modern books and provide computers.
Mr George Hikah Benson, Upper West Regional Minister, expressed concern about the poor performance of students in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) in the Region.
He called for collaboration between stakeholders in education to address the problem, because most people were concerned about the poor results at the SSSCE.
Mr Benson said education had the trump card for meaningful and sustainable development of every country and gave the assurance that government was committed to achieve objectives of the new educational reforms.
He urged the school authorities and other stakeholders not to limit the celebration to merry making but review its performance and find solutions to challenges facing it.
Mr Benson said Lawra Senior High School was one of the pioneer schools in the Region which had produced many great men and women contributing in diverse ways towards the country's development.
He urged the students to avoid acts of truancy, smoking, other forms of misconduct and work hard to improve their academic performance at the SSSCE.
Mr Felix Y. Anzunnah, Headmaster of the school commended government for selecting the school to benefit from the Model School Programme, which brought infrastructural development.
He appealed to government to fence the school, tar the roads and provide electricity.
The school established in 1968 with 72 students now has 700 students.
