Parents advised not to leave their responsibilities for teachers
The Assistant Director at the Mfantseman Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Anthony Baison, has called on parents not to shift their responsibilities to teachers.
Mr Baison said education was a shared responsibility among stakeholders including, government, parents, teachers, community and children and that it was only when each of the stakeholders played their part well that quality education could be delivered.
Addressing an Open Day of Akobima Municipal Assembly Primary and Junior High Schools at Akobima near Abeadze Dominase, Mr Baison said very often parents saw delivery of quality education as the sole responsibility of the teacher.
He said teachers could not do much if parents did not provide the stationery needed by their children for their studies.
Mr Baison advised teachers to take advantage of the numerous in-service trainings being offered by the Directorate to improve their methodology.
Miss Margaret Forson, Headmistress of Abeadze State College, called on parents to discard the notion that the girl-child belonged to the kitchen and therefore needed no formal education.
She appealed to women holding key positions to pay regular visits to schools, especially those in the rural areas for girls to see them as role models.
Alhaji Kwesi Acquah, Chairman of Saltpond Methodist Senior High School PTA, said children were not making good use of the electricity extended to the town to study at night.
He said the Junior High School did not produce a single pass in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for the past two academic years and appealed to parents to encourage their children to have time to study at night.
Mr Clement Owusu, the Headmaster, said the school had taken measures to prevent scoring of zero per cent in BECE.
He appealed to the Municipal Assembly and the community to make the doors to the school building lockable ones to protect books and other properties from stealing.
Nana Kofi Kwebu, Chief of Abeadze Dominase-Benkyego, urged teachers to regard the children as their own children and do everything to help them.
