Parents have been asked to exercise their responsibilities towards their children rather than shift these to
teachers who are already overburdened in the classroom.
Mr. Albert Zigah Ketu-South Member of Parliament made the call at
the eight Speech and Prize Day of the Kekeli Preparatory Junior High
School in Aflao on Tuesday.
It was under the theme; "Quality Education: the role of the
Private school Teacher in Ghana".
Mr. Zigah urged parents to pay their wards' school fees on time
and visit their schools frequently and interact with their teachers and
know how their wards were faring academically.
"It is a responsibility and together we can do it", he said.
He said schools and colleges needed to prepare their pupils and
students to be able to find places in the "choked job market," and
psyche them up to face and overcome personal challenges and those of
nation building.
Mr. Zigah also asked students to aspire for high academic laurels far
above the first-degree level to make themselves marketable.
Mr. Issack T D Abbey, a Chief Collector, CEPS Aflao Sector who chaired
the function said qualitative changes were needed to motivate teachers for higher performance.
Mr. Emmanuel Mawuli, Proprietor said the student/teacher population rose from 70 pupils and four teachers in 1997, to 570 pupils and 31 teachers now.
He said the school's performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations had always been 94 to 100 per cent, while it also performed well in sporting and cultural competitions.
