The Daily Graphic Governance Dialogue, which highlights governance issues in Africa to help improve upon the quality of life of its people, begins at the Accra International Conference Centre tomorrow.
The Governance Dialogue, instituted in 2006 by the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), provides the platform to deal with political, social, economic and corporate issues.
The 2006 Governance Dialogue focused on political governance, while that of 2007, which touched on social and economic governance, was on the theme: “Accelerating Regional Integration for Wealth Creation and Sustainable Development”.
This year's Governance Dialogue, which focuses on democratic or legislative governance, is on the theme: “Effective Democratic Governance: The Role of Stakeholders”.
The objectives of the Governance Dialogue are to learn the multi-dimensional aspects involved in the governance of the nation, make civil society aware of their roles in shaping the destiny of their countries, have civil society acquire knowledge to strengthen and influence the legislative process, and review progress on the democratic process in the West African sub-region.
It will also discuss ways and means of improving upon the funding of governance institutions to enable them to perform effectively, build coalitions and partnerships for achieving greater results in the sub-region and exposing participants to best practice in legislative governance.
The two-day conference will be attended by participants from English-speaking West Africa, namely Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Gambia and Nigeria.
They include managers of national economies, politicians, managers and directors of companies, media practitioners, civil society organisations, gender advocates, the clergy, members of the Judiciary, and governance institutions.
The findings of the conference will be disseminated by way of in-depth media coverage and presentation of copies of the published report to governments and relevant institutions within the ECOWAS sub-region.
