Children upbringing is not the responsibility of government – Asmah
Mr Frank George Asmah, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Chief Executive on Tuesday appealed to parents to plan their families despite the free anti-natal and delivery care.
He urged them to be responsible for their children’s upbringing avoid social misfits in society.
Mr Asmah made the appeal when launching “Family Planning” services in the municipality at Elmina.
Jointly organized by the KEEA Municipal Health Directorate and Quality Health Service, it was to create awareness on the need for planned families to reduce unsafe abortion, poverty and teenage pregnancy and help improve coverage of family planning.
He pointed out that after free anti-natal and delivery, capitation grant and school feeding programme, parents were responsible for the provision of stationery and other basic educational materials for their children.
Dr Seth Adu, Senior Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Central Regional Hospital paid glowing tribute to women for their untiring efforts in children upbringing through sleepless nights, training, teachings and their love during the absence of men and urged them to continue with their good works.
However, he called on them to plan their families to stay healthy to look after them because too many deliveries could result in ruptured womb and subsequent death of the expectant mother.
Dr Adu urged men to actively participate in family planning and denied that vasectomy could make them impotent.
Mrs Janet Ansong Tornui of Quality Health Service said family planning was a major component of reproductive health and its re-launching was to ensure women particularly benefited.
She said women could continue their education, get involved in social programmes and stay healthy to cater for their children and urged them to contact health personnel on issues about family planning.
Dr Yaw Ofori-Yeboah, KEEA Municipal Director of Health Services, said participation of family planning had reduced in the country and the launching would create awareness, introduce new methods and services available and where to access them.
