Pokuase Catholics Celebrate Anniv.

THE St. Sylvanus Catholic Church at Pokuase, in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region, has held a thanksgiving service to climax the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the church.

The celebration which was on the theme: "Ebenezer, thus far the Lord has brought us", attracted other Catholic faithful from Amansaman, Medie, Kutunse, Adjen Kotoku, Sarpeiman among others.

In a sermon, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Most Rev Charles Palmer Buckle, appealed to Ghanaians to avoid tribalism, political divisiveness and ethnocentrism in the discharge of their duties.

He said that even though individuals have their right to belong to any political party of their choice, that should not transcend to their places of work "because when that happens it can hinder productivity and slow down development".

The Archbishop, who based his homily on the parable of the sower, said, "As Ghanaians, we are all one people and one flesh created by God. There should not be any divisiveness in the discharge of our duties or saying that this person belongs to party "A" or "B" or from tribe "A" or "B.

"As Christians, we should let our impact be felt at wherever we are, or at wherever we work", so that it will bring productivity and profit."

He appealed to parents to always take critical look at the way their wards dress at any given time.

"It is sometimes disturbing, the kind of dresses that some children, especially females, put on in the full glare of their parents."

Such clothes, he said, "portray the kind of training the child receives at home which sometimes reflects on the parents."

The chairman of the Parish Pastorial Council (PPC), Mr Albert Fynn, said the church was established in 1948 through the instrumentality of two people, Messrs, Cosmos Sena and William Amuzu Akado in their quest to bring christianity to the area.

He said that 60 years in the life of any person, institution or society needs to be celebrated particularly the church considering the challenges that it faced in terms of its development.

"Your Grace, we could not have chosen a better theme than, "Ebenezer, thus far the Lord has brought us," considering those years of challenges and problems," he stressed.

"We are indeed thankful to the lord for all his graces and mercies to us for living to see this memorable day and bringing us this far as a community."

Mr Fynn also commended members of the congregation for their contribution and support which has brought physical development of the church.

A number of activities were organised as part of the anniversary.
