Formulate effective policies for children’s development

Mr Divine Opare, the Central Regional Director of Department of Children, on Thursday called for the formulation of pragmatic policies and enactment of effective legislations to enhance the welfare of children.
He said children, formed a large portion of the country's human resource base and they should be given the right environment to develop adding they should have freedom of expression and be allowed to choose subjects that could help them to acquire their desired career.
Mr Opare was speaking after a debate that was organized by the Department for Effutu Anglican Junior High Secondary School (JHSS) and Metropolitan Assembly JHSS, both in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
The event that was to mark the celebration of the African Union Day of the African Child, at Efutu, near Cape Coast was under the theme: “Right to Participate: let Children be seen and heard”.
Mr Opare observed that despite efforts to ensure the survival, protection and development of children throughout the world, children continued to suffer various forms of abuses, which have thwarted such initiatives.
He said children played various roles within the family set up, such as undertaking domestic chores and caring for their younger siblings.
Mr Opare said it was important to celebrate the Day, to “send signals about how we treasure children who are our greatest assets and priceless gifts”.
He called on parents through out Africa to ensure the protection, proper care of their children.
Headmaster of the Effutu Anglican (JHSS) Metropolitan Assembly JHSS, Mr Saeed Daud cautioned parents against imposing subjects and careers on their children.
The Metropolitan Assembly JHSS won the debate with 68 points
and Effutu Anglican JHSS place second with 63 points.
Both schools were presented with books.
