Mrs. Akua Akubour Debrah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Education, has called for collaboration between parents and teachers in maintaining discipline and promoting academic excellence among students.
She stressed the need for parents to focus on essential issues that would help improve the academic performance of their children.
Mrs. Debrah was addressing parents, teachers and students of Sunyani Senior High School at its Awards Day in Sunyani at the weekend.
About 38 students and four retired non-teaching staff received awards as well as philanthropists, organizations and well wishers of the school.
The students were presented with books, laptop computers, scholarship packages and cash prizes whilst the retired non-teaching staff received roofing sheets, refrigerators and television sets.
Mrs. Debrah said the school had well qualified and competent teachers to prepare the students towards academic excellence and advised the students to make good use of the teachers to enable them to pass their examinations well.
She commended parents for their interest in the education of their children as shown in their massive attendance at the ceremony and urged them to maintain the spirit.
Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, said the government was doing all it could to ensure high academic performance in schools and to make education accessible to all Ghanaians.
He said the additional one year to second cycle education and the educational reforms programme were meant to address the inadequacies of the country's education system.
The Regional Minister appealed to parents, teachers and students not to see this as extra burden but should rather co-operate with government towards the achievement of success of the reform programme.
Mr. Joseph Awuah, Headmaster of the school, said 15 people made up of both products and non-products of the school had established scholarship schemes in the various courses at the school and in support of brilliant but needy students.
Mr. said the school faced problems including lack of an efficient vehicle, a dormitory block, classroom block, teachers' bungalows and failure of students to pay school fees promptly.
