Teachers Call Off Strike

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called off its strike action, which was originally scheduled to begin on Monday. The new twist followed a compromise reached between representatives of the association and the government. The association had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if government fails to implement supervision allowance and improved conditions of service.

Government’s decision was contained in a letter signed by Finance Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo which, stated that “approval is hereby given to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to implement the rates of supervision allowances for various categories. of teaching saff of the service with effect from May 1, 2001.”

At a hurriedly arranged press conference, the General Secretary of GNAT, Paul Osei Mensah said the position adopted by government has been accepted by the association, hence the decision to call of the intended strike action.

He announced that a joint technical committee has been appointed by the GES and GNAT to work out modalities for implementing revised conditions of service for teachers.
