We will respect international agreements – John Mahama

By Linda Akrasi Kotey - Ghanaian Chronicle

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice presidential aspirant and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole/Bamboi, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, has said an NDC government, under Professor John Atta Mills, would respect international agreements, entered into by the Kufuor administration.

Mr. Mahama said succeeding governments, which did not respect international agreements, entered into by previous governments, caused major disruptions in development programmes, and discouraged foreigners from investing in the economy.

He said this when the Danish Ambassador and Country Representative of DANIDA, Mr. Flemming Pedersen called on him, at his office at the NDC Headquarters in Accra.

He said in cases where there was the need to review any international agreements in the national interest, the due process would be followed, and any review would be carried out, in the full consultation and consensus of the international partners.

The Danish Ambassador called on Mr. John Mahama, to find out the party's views and programmes, in the event they were victorious in the coming elections, in December 2008.

Mr. Petersen praised Ghana's achievement in democratic and constitutional governance, and said Denmark was committed to continuing to support Ghana in her development programmes, as long as the government in power continued to respect the rule of law, and democratic governance.

The Ambassador and Mr. Mahama, held an hour-long interaction, on the NDC party's vision in varied sectors, including agriculture, the economy, education, health, and the electoral process, especially in relation to the alleged bloated voters register.

Also in attendance at the meeting, was the General Secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who said the difference between the NDC and the NPP, was that while the NDC saw the human being as being at the center of development planning, the NPP, as a result of its philosophy of building a property-owning democracy, prioritizes protection of property in its development planning.

Mr. Nketiah was confident that the NDC would win the elections, and assured the Ambassador of the deepening of relations between Ghana and Denmark, under and an NDC Government.
