Nsawam Cocaine Suspects Remanded

Amidst heavy security yesterday, the three men arrested at Nsawam in the Eastern Region for importing 399 parcels of cocaine from Guinea into the country were put before an Accra Circuit Court to answer drug related charges.

The accused persons, Kwame Anane, Kofi Amewu Eugene, both drivers, and Deblui Kofi, unemployed, who according to the police were assisting in police investigations, were only brought to court by officers to seek remand warrant so they could be remanded lawfully.

The court therefore issued the warrant and they are currently in police custody at the Criminals Investigations Department, Headquarters.

The accused persons, with no legal representation before Justice Frank Manu, were charged with three counts of conspiracy, possession and importation of narcotic drug without lawful authority.

Their pleas were not taken and would reappear on June 19, 2008.
According DSP Paul Kissi Frimpong, on May 30, 2008 between the hours of 6 and 7 am, upon a tip-off, a team of policemen from Nsawam Police Station mounted surveillance on a Mercedes Benz cargo truck with registration number GT3359Z from Kumasi.

The vehicle, on reaching Nsawam, was intercepted by the team and a search conducted uncovered 399 parcels of substances suspected to be cocaine concealed in an artificially created compartment.

The driver of the truck, Kofi Amewu, a Ghanaian and the other two occupants, Deblui Kofi and Kwame Anane, who happened to be Togolese, were arrested to assist the police in their investigations.

Further investigations revealed that the vehicle belonged to Evolve Logistics Company, located at Teshie, Accra.

The cocaine, according to reports, has been handed over to the Head of Organised Crime Unit of the CID of the Police, Chief Superintendent Vincent Dedzo.

Media reports have it that the cocaine is being kept in a Black Maria truck at the Police CID headquarters instead of the Exhibits Room.
