Youth Urged to protect water bodies

The Water and Sanitation Systems Coordinator of the Community water and sanitation Agency, Ms Charlotte A Engmann has called on the youth to protect the country's water bodies so as to help reduce future water crisis.

Ms Engman was speaking at this year's Youth day, organised by the Ghana Girl Guides Association under the theme “Water is Life, Let's save our water bodies” held at Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

In her speech, she recounted the importance of water to the development of people and advised the youth to avoid cutting down trees around these water bodies but rather plant more and also stop using areas around water bodies as refuse dumps and defecation points. Other Speakers were from the Water Resources Commission.

On her part, the Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Girl Guides Association, Mrs Patience Aniagyei mentioned that the Association decided to chose Kyebi for this year's celebration because of the Birim River which is their main source of water and also for the fact that this river has for sometime been facing some environmental challenges amongst others.

She later donated water filtering and preservation materials to some schools at Kyebi after a demonstration on how they are used. She advised the students to take very good care of
these items.

Other major activities which marked the celebration included, a float through some streets of the Kyebi Community and a tree planting exercise at the Birim River.
