THE activities of alien nomadic herdsmen in some parts of the Eastern Region was a major concern of participants especially the media at this year’s Eastern Regional Meet-the-Press series held at the Regional Coordinating Council at Koforidua.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Kwadwo Afram Asiedu, answered questions from both the media and the public on the activities and operations of the Fulani herdsmen in some parts of the region.

He said that their operations in the region were a matter of grave concern to the coordinating council and that efforts were being made with the security agencies to curb them.

He said that there have been serious reports almost everyday from the Kwahu North (Afram Plains), Fanteakwa, Kwahu South and Manya Krobo districts about the destructive activities of itinerant alien herdsmen.

Mr Asiedu said that often time the herdsmen leave the cattle to destroy large tracts of farm lands and produce, pollute water bodies and at certain times the herdsmen also rape women and girls in the communities where they operate.

He said that the activities of the herdsmen resulted in clashes between them and the local communities which lead to loss of lives and properties.

The regional minister said that the Regional Coordinating Council was liaising with the security agencies and the chiefs in the affected areas to wage war on the activities of the herdsmen in the region so that the people would have their peace and be free to go about their businesses in the communities.
