Mr Francis Okine, the Chairman of the Agricultural Sub-Committee of the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, has called on District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies to set up committees to determine transport fares whenever prices of petroleum products were reviewed.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Saltpond on Wednesday, Mr Okine also known as Nana Ayittey said, the importance of such a committee could not be over-emphasised in view of the fluctuation of the prices of petroleum products.
He said the committee, which membership must comprised representatives of drivers' unions, the Assemblies, some identifiable groups in the area, and traditional rulers could prevent the current impasse between passengers and drivers and their mates.
Nana Ayittey noted that, such committees existed some time past and added that at that time, there was not much confusion over fixing of lorry fares as was the case now.
He said the escalating food prices must not be compounded with uncontrolled high transport charges and appealed to drivers and their unions to help to make life bearable for the people.
