A Chinese table tennis enthusiast, Mr. Patrick Chu, has donated 10 New Table Tennis accessories worth $10,000 to the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).
The donation was made possible through Squadron Leader Ebo Bartels, GTTA chairman.
The table tennis equipment, which is awaiting clearance at the Tema Harbour will undoubtedly help compliment National Sports Council's efforts at developing the sport in the country.
In its strategic development plan, the Association is in serious talks with the Chinese Embassy in Accra, to provide scholarships for 8 national players (U-15 Boys and Girls) and a Coach, to enable them participate in a six month training programme in China.
The deal, when successful, will offer the players international exposure and sharpen their edges. The U-15 team, it would be recalled, won a bronze medal at the just-ended African Juniour Championship in Egypt, to qualify for the World Junior Championship slated for Sweden in October, this year.
In a statement signed by the Secretary General of GTTA, Kwame Amponfi Jnr., it noted that local companies like GOIL, SIC and COCOBOD have all been approached by GTTA to sponsor some outline local competition ahead of the ALL-African Senior Table Tennis Champion to be held in Congo Kinshasa in December 2008.
Akosombo Textile Limited (ATL) has also agreed to sponsor the 2008 Table Tennis League which is to start soon.
Meanwhile, starting May 15, 2008, the GTTA Secretary General for Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) will be the care-taker secretary for GTTA.
