JAG Chapter in Ghana

In its hanker to act as an eye to the blind, feet to the lame and hope to young people, JAG Sports and Education Foundation, has spread its tentacles and consequently established a branch in Ghana.

The Foundation, headed by Olympic medalist Elana Mayer, basically support children using schools as a vehicle and sports as the fuel and giving young people opportunities and pride themselves, enhancing personal development and promoting leadership and peace.

At the launch at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra last Saturday, Mr Gayton McKenzie shared his past life experience which saw him making a “Choice” to be career criminal at age 16, robbing banks which resulted in his 15-year prison sentence.

Despite his challenging beginnings, he defied the challenges and decided to make something good out of his life and today he is considered one of the finest motivational speakers not only in his native country, but across the World.

“You have a choice, you can choose to be a criminal, and you will be a criminal, you can choose drugs, and you will be a junkie and soon become a criminal. Or you can choose a life of fulfilling your dreams and achieving worthwhile things, it is up to you,” he admonished.

Mr Herbert Mensah, former chairman of Asante Kotoko, who invited the Group to Ghana for a discussion about the establishment of a Chapter of JAG in Ghana and to take part of on the May 9 Remembrance Events, revealed “While remembering the dead, we must never forget the future. The youth of this planet is the future and we must do all we can to give them hope and will to excel in all they do.”

The Sports Development Officer of the Ministry Of Education, Science and Sports, Dr Owusu Ansah, who stood in for the sector Minister, Professor Dominique Fobih, pledged his outfit's support and promised effective collaboration with the Foundation because of its association with Mr Mensah.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who spoke highly of Mr Mensah also pledged the NDC's support should they return to power.

The Foundation was established in South Africa, 2006 and has assisted disadvantaged schools, sports teams and other similar initiatives.
