Zoomlion (Ghana) Limited, a private waste management company, has launched a project aimed at encouraging the active participation of assembly members in waste collection and public education on sanitation in the various municipalities and districts.

Under the project, assembly members are expected to assist the company in waste collection, especially door to door waste collection in their areas in the spirit of public-private participation.

Ms Sharon Quarshie, Ashanti Regional Operations Manager of the company, told reporters at Obuasi, that the necessary logistics would be provided for assembly members to actively engage in public education programmes on good sanitation.

It is also meant to identify themselves with the overall efforts in waste management and serve as agents of change in their areas.

She said trucks for the waste collection and public education programmes on sanitation will be procured by the company and supplied to the assembly members on hire-purchase terms.

The trucks, valued at GH¢19,500 each are to be paid for within a five-year period.

The company, she said, would be responsible for servicing, repairs and maintenance of the trucks in addition to the payment of GH¢200 to the assembly members for the public education component of the project.
