ONETOUCH PREMIER League leaders, Kumasi Asante Kotoko will clash with 2006 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Cup winners, Obuasi Ashgold tomorrow at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The match, which is the 34th edition of the SWAG Cup, would be sponsored by the State Insurance Company (SIC) in honour of the late Henry Plange Nyemitei, a Patron of SWAG.
It would also be used to raise funds for the association, which would celebrate its 40th anniversary in August this year.
Both Asante Kotoko and Ashgold are in the best of shapes, if their performance in this year's Onetouch Premier League is anything to go by; but Kotoko's pedigree in SWAG Cup matches as 13-time winners in the 33 year-old history of the annual challenge Cup, no doubt puts them ahead of their rivals Ashgold.
However, Ashgold's form which has seen them win some important matches in the first round of the Premier League, is sending shivers down the spines of Asante Kotoko fans.
DAILY GUIDE SPORTS investigations revealed that the SWAG Cup annual match has won a national appeal since its inception in 1972.
In that year Mysterious Abusua Dwarfs won the first edition.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko, who lifted the trophy for the first time in 1981, has 13 titles to its name while Obuasi Ashgold has won it only three times.
Sources have indicated that because the competition is gaining momentum, plans are in place for the sponsors, SIC, to make the event a four-club competition to improve its competiveness.
The company is also considering introducing a brand new trophy for each SWAG match.
