Chief Attacked For Setting Foot On NPP Premises

The Chief of Edwenase in Kumasi paid dearly for setting foot on the premises of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) vetting exercise in Kumasi when a fierce blow from a youngman sent him crushing to the ground on allegation that he was working for one of the contestants of the Kwadaso primary.

“He pulled me from my car and launched two fisted attacks on my person sending me to the ground,” Nana Kyei told the Daily Graphic at his residence at Edwenase, a Kumasi suburb.
 

The chief had a dislocated shoulder but said “in the interest of the party I have decided not to lodge any complaint with the police”.

Nana Kyei said he was accused of working for Dr Afriyie Akoto a parliamentary aspirant of the party in the Kwadaso Constituency.

The timely intervention of the police saved the situation from degenerating into further trouble.

The alleged youngman, who gave his name as Asamoah, a brother of the Member of Parliament (MP) of Kwadaso, Josephine Hilda Addo, however stated that, it was Nana Kyei who first threw a punch at him before the two of them started trading punches, one of which sent the chief down.

Asamoah told the Daily Graphic that it was about 11p.m. on Sunday when he went to the chief who was sitting in his car to enquire from him why he had not been visiting the MP in his house of late.

“I asked this because the chief who was very close to my sister had stopped visiting her”, Asamoah said.

He stated that Nana Kyei took offence at his question and insulted him “but I continued to pester him with the questions”.

Asamoah said “all that I saw was a violent push from the chief and I fell”.

“I then rose from the ground and went for the chief and a clash ensued with the chief also visiting the ground”, Asamoah said.

He explained that he never accused Nana Kyei of working for Dr Afriyie Akoto as he claimed.

Earlier, however, Nana Kyei had told this reporter that, he did not go to the vetting grounds to play politics as his accusers claimed.

He said as a human being he may have his political leanings “but I am a chief and cannot play active party politics in the open”.

“I went there in the night to pick up my wife, an ardent supporter of the NPP, who had been at the vetting grounds all the while”, Nana said.

He stated that he was in his car waiting for his wife when Asamoah approached and questioned him as to why he was at the place that night.

The chief said before he could give him any answer, Asamoah pulled him from the car and threw two punches at him which made him fall on the ground.

He said the police quickly came in to save the situation. Meanwhile, the NPP has completed the vetting exercise in the Ashanti Region and curious party members are waiting for the outcome, which would determine the fate of the aspirants.
