NPP vetting dogged by protests

The New Patriotic Party started vetting its parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti Region but the process was disrupted.

NPP supporters at Subin, Nshiasu and Offinsu South constituencies staged demonstrations at the vetting venue resulting in a temporary hold up in the vetting process.

Supporters of the party in the Subin constituency protested the candidature of the Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Mr. Isaac Osei.

The Offinso South constituents called for primaries in the constituency.

This was in response to a decision by the NPP not to organise primaries in constituencies where it won the seats through bye-elections.

Members of Parliament who won bye-elections in the last one or two years were to contest this year's elections as unopposed but the constituents of Offinso South are threatening to vote against their mother party if the decision is not reversed.

Party officials including the National Executive Committee arranged a meeting at the Regional Co-ordinating Council to discuss the issues.

They resolved to revert to the Two Vine lodge, the original venue for the vetting to continue with the process.

Aspirants in six constituencies are expected to be vetted on Sunday, April 13, 2008.

Some of them are Asante Akyem South, Subin, Manpong, Manyia and Kwabre West.
