Mr Owusu Afriyie, a Kumasi-based legal practitioner and potential challenger of Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Old-Tafo-Pankrono, has described the recent resolution alleged to have been signed by the constituency executive and polling station chairmen to endorse Dr Akoto to retain the seat as a fictitious claim which must be discarded.
He alleged that the so-called resolution was only meant to collect time and transport (T&T) for the meeting attended.
Mr Owusu Afriyie, popularly called Sir John, who spoke to the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, said the information he gathered after Dr Akoto's meeting with the constituency executive and polling station chairmen revealed that their names were just written so that after the meeting their T&T would be paid to them.
He said Dr Akoto did not command support in the constituency but admitted that the task ahead for both of them was formidable.
Mr Afriyie said his contender knew that he was not a pushover and noted that if the 2000 contest was anything to go by, then that healthy rivalry that characterised the primary was going to be revisited.
He disclosed that he picked his forms last Monday and that his relationship with the constituency executive, as well as other party members in the constituency, was very beautiful.
Dr Akoto, on March 7, 2008, organised a meeting attended by the constituency executive, polling station chairmen, elders and patrons and media men, including those from the Daily Graphic, and it was there that he formally declared his intention to contest the seat to become MP for another term.
When the meeting came to a close, a signed paper bearing the names of those who attended the meeting, with a resolution attached, was presented to the media present.
Some of the people who spoke at the meeting commended the MP for the judicious use of his share of the MP's Common Fund and also for his good relationship with the people, which they described as unprecedented.
The MP has provided scholarships for students in both second-cycle and tertiary institutions, totalling over GH¢100,000 among other services.
