The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports is to set up a committee to investigate the death of Mustapha Gafaru, a final-year science student of the Adisadel College.

Gafaru was said to have jumped from the fourth floor of a new classroom block of the school last Sunday, when the senior housemaster went round the block to lock up the place. He was one of many students who failed to attend that day's church service.

Professor Dominic Fobih, the sector Minister, made this known to the press after a meeting with the Headmaster of the school, Mr Herbert Graham, on Monday.

Professor Fobih, who was accompanied by the Central Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur, described the incident as regrettable and called for calm and restraint in the wake of the unfortunate incident.

The minister and his entourage later joined the bereaved family and sympathisers who gathered in front of the Adisadel Mosque for the burial ceremony of Gafaru, who was laid to rest at the cemetery at Asorekyeano, near Cape Coast, on Monday.

He expressed his condolence to the bereaved family, the school authorities and the students in their moment of grief.

The school has since Monday been closed down on the orders of the Central Regional Security Council as a result of agitation by students over their dead colleague.

Only teachers and administrative staff are now on the campound while the police have been deployed there.
