Yesterday during his State of the Nation Address, President Kufuor mentioned the West Africa Gas Pipeline and its completion.

He proudly announced that nitrogen had started flowing already. I winced at that because I was not sure if it was nitrogen.

I think the president meant natural gas. Somehow the “nat” and “gas” might have mixed up to come across as nitrogen.

But anyway, I understood what he meant, so did, I am sure, many others. He went on to give an overview of his tenure so that by the time he ended his address, there were so many substantive issues to bite in to or chew on – really nitrogen well, nitrogen.

When the Speaker, the Rt. Hon. Sekyi-Hughes called for the motion and secondment to accept the president's speech, it fell on Majority Leader Abraham Aidoo and Minority Leader Alban Bagbin respectively. Mr. Aidoo tabled the motion. In seconding Alban Bagbin started: “Nitrogen does not burn...”

Oho, I caught myself saying... It was so, shall we say, so crass and so typical. Trust them, I scoffed...

But no I must be careful here; one man's crassness could be another's humour. The Minority Leader was perhaps trying to be funny after all!
