The government has released two billion cedis for the first phase of a street naming project in the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis.

Mr John Latse, Public Relations Officer of the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA), told the GNA in an interview yesterday that six billion cedis had been earmarked for the project.

The first phase of the project is targeted at naming 500 streets and this would be completed before the start of the Ghana 2008 football tournament.

Mr Latse said about 1,000 street sign poles would be erected during the first phase and streets would be named after national heroes and those who had accomplished something for the nation, the Western Region and the Metropolis. He said assembly members have also been asked to consult their traditional authorities and submit names of persons they wanted streets to be named after.

Mr Latse said the naming of some streets would be auctioned and although their prices have not been fixed each street would cost not less than 10 million cedis.
