THE Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified its hunt for burglars who broke into the Kumasi Central branch of the SG-SSB Bank and made away with billions of cedis.

Meanwhile, David Asiedu Berkye, the Deputy Manager of the bank, who was arrested in connection with the robbery is still in custody.

He was arrested last Saturday the day of the incident following police suspicion that some insiders knew of the theft.

'We strongly believe that there is an ‘insider’. They could not have succeeded in their operation without the help of an insider,' Inspector Mohammed Yusif Tanko of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs, said. The suspects, according to him, entered the banking hall through a back window and surprisingly none of the security personnel of the bank saw them.

The suspects were said to have opened the strong room with a key and squeezed themselves through an iron fence to steal the money.

No other arrests have since been made.

Efforts by the Times to talk to some of the officials of the bank proved futile as they were not prepared to comment.
