Police arrest teacher for alleged connection with Nyinahin Catholic SHS assault video

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, in connection with the assault of a female student captured in a viral video that has triggered widespread public anger.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Patience Chibu, a student of the same school.

According to a statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Antiwi of the Regional Public Affairs Unit, the suspect was picked up by a Nyinahini District Police Patrol Team on June 8, 2026, at about 7:00pm following reports of the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the teacher, who also serves as a caretaker of the school’s hostel, confronted the student and some male students over alleged misconduct within the hostel. The confrontation reportedly escalated into a misunderstanding that led to the assault.

In the widely circulated video, the teacher is seen repeatedly striking the student before allegedly lifting and throwing her to the ground, while bystanders are heard pleading with him to stop and reminding him that she is a girl.

The incident sparked tension on the school campus, with some students reportedly retaliating by throwing stones at the suspect. It is also alleged that some youths from the town were invited to the hostel in an attempt to attack him. The situation was later brought under control by a police patrol team.

The police have issued a Medical Report Form for the victim to undergo examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and to resort to lawful means in addressing grievances.

The Ghana Education Service has also confirmed the arrest and indicated that investigations are ongoing through the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate. It further noted that both the teacher and the student have undergone medical examination.

The case has reignited public debate on violence in schools, with child rights advocates calling for stronger safeguards for students and stricter sanctions for educators who engage in abuse.

Police say investigations are ongoing and the suspect will be arraigned before court upon completion of the process.
