Residents of Abura Dunkwa in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region and surrounding communities have expressed relief following the restoration of the district's fire tender by the management of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Divisional Officer Grade I Winifred Bonney, District Fire Commander, said the fire tender had been out of service for several years, creating significant operational challenges for personnel at the Abura Dunkwa Fire Station.
She noted that the restoration of the vehicle marked a major turning point for the district and neighbouring communities, providing the Service with the operational capacity it had long lacked.
According to her, the Abura Dunkwa Fire Station can now respond to emergencies with its own functional equipment, thereby improving emergency response within the area.
However, she identified the absence of fire hydrants as one of the major challenges confronting the Service and appealed to the Government and other relevant stakeholders to provide the necessary support.
The latest criticism of the GNFS followed a fire outbreak on Saturday, May 30, which gutted the premises of Bohyeba FM, a radio station at Nyankumasi Ahenkro in the Assin South District.
The fire destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana cedis. Although no casualties were recorded, firefighters from Mankessim had to respond to the incident and bring the situation under control.
