The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against acts of mob justice following an incident in which a teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School was allegedly attacked after a viral video showed him assaulting a female student.

The caution comes after tensions escalated at the school following the circulation of the video, which triggered anger among some students and community members.

In response to the situation, the police say some students reportedly retaliated by pelting stones at the teacher, while others allegedly mobilised local youth to storm the school hostel in an attempt to attack him.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 9, the law enforcement agency said the situation created a volatile environment before officers intervened to restore calm.

The Command stressed that, while investigations into the assault case are ongoing, individuals must not take the law into their own hands.

"The situation was, however, brought under control through the timely intervention of the police patrol team," the statement said.

"The Ashanti Regional Police Command urges the public to remain calm and use lawful and peaceful means in resolving grievances and disputes," the statement added.

Authorities further explained that the suspect in the assault case is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while a medical report form has been issued to the victim for examination and treatment.

The police also indicated that the alleged assault involving the teacher, who also serves as a hostel caretaker, stemmed from reports of misconduct at the hostel.

This, according to the police, led to a misunderstanding which ultimately escalated into the viral incident.
